Friend Not Food

Open edition giclée print

60 x 80cm, fits a standard frame

Sharks have lived in our oceans for 450 million years. They are older even than the rings of Saturn. ‘Friend Not Food’ explores the story of sharks from their ancient history, to their portrayal in pop culture and their dramatic decline in the face of human activity.

Half of Britons and Americans fear sharks. 64% of those said they would rather sharks did not exist. Yet you are more likely to be killed by a vending machine than a shark.

100 million sharks are killed each year. Overfishing and poaching for their fins have obliterated shark populations by 70% in the past 50 years.

There are 500 species of sharks swimming in the oceans today. From great whites to wobbegongs, they inhabit every ocean niche and have shaped our blue planet into the world we know today. Though they have survived five mass extinctions, this one might be their last. In order to prevent this, we need to tell a new story for sharks.

Sharks are friends, not food.
